Surrey County Council has activated its winter road plans, ensuring a fleet of 38 gritting vehicles is available around the clock. These vehicles are prepared to cover over 1,775 miles of the county's busiest roads throughout the colder months, typically from October to March.
The council has stocked 10,000 tonnes of salt at four depots strategically located across Surrey. This extensive supply is crucial for maintaining road safety during anticipated severe weather events.
In addition to the main fleet, which includes uniquely named vehicles like 'Sub-Zero Hero', two mini gritters are on standby for challenging routes. The council has also filled 1,700 grit bins at non-priority locations, chosen for their potential for tricky junctions, slopes, or high traffic and pedestrian flow.
Council officials are committed to keeping communities safe and mobile. They will closely monitor weather forecasts in collaboration with the Met Office to adapt their response as needed throughout the winter season.
