Super Typhoon Champi Roars, Another Pacific Storm Brews
21 Oct
Summary
- Super Typhoon Champi is expected to intensify with winds over 160 mph.
- A new tropical threat, Invest 94E, is developing in the Pacific.
- A Super El Niño is contributing to the active Pacific tropical season.
The Pacific basin remains exceptionally active, with Super Typhoon Champi intensifying and threatening regions including the Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa, and northern Taiwan. Champi, which recently impacted Guam with Category 4 strength winds, is forecast to peak as a violent super typhoon with sustained winds over 160 mph. Its track is expected to curve northwest towards Eastern Asia.
Concurrently, a new tropical threat designated Invest 94E is forming south of Mexico, showing a high probability of development over the next seven days. Forecast models suggest potential impacts on Mexico, possibly bringing the first V-named storm since 2018, which may be named Vance. This active tropical season is being supercharged by a brewing Super El Niño.
