Storm Chandra Unleashes Fury on Northern Ireland
26 Jan
Summary
- Yellow rainfall alert issued for Monday across five Northern Ireland counties.
- Amber wind warning and rain alert for Tuesday, with potential flooding.
- Severe gusts up to 70mph expected, threatening power cuts and building damage.

Northern Ireland is currently facing severe weather conditions as Storm Chandra arrives, with multiple warnings in effect. A yellow rainfall alert was issued for Monday across counties Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, and Tyrone. This is followed by an amber warning for wind and a rain alert on Tuesday, expected to cause flooding.
Forecasters predict up to 50 mm of rain in many areas within 48 hours, with over 100 mm possible in eastern high ground. Severe gusts of up to 70mph are anticipated on Tuesday morning in Antrim, Down, and Londonderry, with stronger winds along exposed coasts. These conditions may lead to travel disruptions across roads, air, and sea.
Officials are cautioning the public to avoid affected forests and country parks due to high winds. The saturated ground increases the risk of flooding, with warnings that communities could be cut off by floodwater, posing a danger to life. There is also a significant chance of power cuts and damage to buildings. Rainfall warnings have also been issued for parts of the Republic of Ireland.
