Surprise Snow Snarls St. Louis Streets!
1 Dec
Summary
- Unexpected snowfall began earlier than anticipated Monday afternoon.
- Roads were not pre-treated due to the surprise timing of the snow.
- Travel is strongly advised against, with traffic stopped on many roads.

An unexpected snow event began falling across the St. Louis area on Monday afternoon, significantly impacting local traffic and causing widespread disruptions. The snowfall commenced around noon, earlier than the expected 4 p.m. arrival, catching many by surprise.
This early onset meant that essential road treatments by the Missouri Department of Transportation were not applied as planned. Bob Becker, MoDOT Maintenance Engineer, noted that even with treatments, the snow rate might have overwhelmed them, leading to slick roadways and potential ice accumulation.
As a result, many St. Louis area streets and highways are experiencing stopped traffic. Residents are strongly urged to postpone travel or remain home to ensure their safety and to allow conditions to improve.
