Spain's June Heat Shatters Records: Deadly Temperatures Grip Nation

Mainland Spain is currently experiencing unprecedented June temperatures, marking the highest daily averages recorded since at least 1950. The current heatwave, which has impacted much of Europe, is estimated to have contributed to 212 deaths in Spain between Sunday and Wednesday. This data comes from the MoMo monitoring system, which analyzes mortality spikes in relation to historical data and weather patterns.

Last year, Spain recorded 3,832 heat-related deaths between May 16 and September 30, an 87.6% increase from the previous year. The current week's heat has brought exceptional warmth, with average temperatures surpassing previous June records. Furthermore, record-breaking "tropical nights," characterized by minimum temperatures that prevent cooling, are making sleep difficult and endangering public health. These extreme weather events have led to high alert levels, even in typically cooler northern regions like Cantabria and the Basque Country, where temperatures exceeded 40C.
