South Florida Heat Wave Breaks; Rain on the Way

South Florida is experiencing a shift from a record-breaking heat wave to more seasonable temperatures. Highs are forecast to be in the low 90s on Friday, a welcome change from the previous week's intensity. However, a heat advisory is active today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. due to anticipated heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop later Friday and continue through the weekend. These storms may produce heavy downpours, lightning, and gusty winds. While there's a low risk of rip currents along Atlantic beaches and a very high UV index, no advisories are in place for boaters.

In other weather news, two areas in the Atlantic are under observation by the CBS News Miami NEXT Weather team for possible tropical development. One system, north-northeast of the Azores, has a low potential for cyclone development and could gain subtropical or tropical characteristics as it moves toward Portugal and northwestern Spain.

A second weak area of low pressure is located over the central subtropical Atlantic, east-southeast of Bermuda, with a disorganized pattern of showers and thunderstorms. This system has a low potential for development as it moves west-southwest before turning northward early next week. Currently, neither system poses an immediate threat to South Florida.
