Coastal Flood Alert: Major Flooding Expected
25 Oct
Summary
- Major coastal flooding is expected with high tides and storms.
- Strong northeast winds gusting up to 40 mph will persist.
- High tides are predicted to peak on Monday and Tuesday.
South Florida's east coast is under a coastal flood warning as major flooding is anticipated. This flooding will be intensified by showers and storms moving through the area, particularly when they coincide with high tide, leaving water with nowhere to recede.
A strong northeast wind will develop on Sunday afternoon, with gusts expected to reach near 40 mph through Tuesday. This persistent onshore wind will not only drive more water towards the coast but also impede the drainage of intercoastal and bay areas between high tides.
Tide heights have already reached elevated levels and are predicted to climb higher on Monday and Tuesday, coinciding with the full moon on Monday. The highest tides are specifically forecast for Tuesday morning. The situation is under a NEXT Weather Alert through Tuesday.
By mid-week, water levels are expected to gradually decrease as the full moon passes and winds diminish. However, brief flooding could still occur if storms align with high tide. Rough surf and seas will continue throughout the week, with a gale warning in effect until Tuesday.
Residents are urged to avoid driving through floodwaters and to limit travel during high tide periods in flood-prone zones. High tides are shifting later each day, occurring around 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Monday, and approximately 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Tuesday.
