A high surf advisory is active for beaches in Ventura and Los Angeles counties, as well as Catalina and Santa Barbara islands, through the evening of July 21. Similar advisories are in place for Orange and San Diego county coastal areas, with dangerous swimming and surfing conditions warned by the National Weather Service. Peak surf was anticipated for July 20, and beach erosion is also a possibility.
While current advisories extend through July 21, hazardous conditions may persist. A secondary system following Elida and a southern hemisphere swell arriving later in the week could lead to further dangerous beach conditions. This follows a prior incident where a young girl died due to elevated surf and strong rip currents.
