Met Office Warns of Flooding Threat as Storm Claudia Hits England and Wales

As of 2025-11-14T12:35:45+00:00, the Met Office has upgraded its weather warnings for parts of England and Wales as Storm Claudia is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region on Friday.
The forecaster has issued amber warnings for "persistent and heavy" rain, which will be in effect from noon on 2025-11-17 until the end of the day. The affected areas include Wales, the Midlands, the south-west, the south-east, and the east of England. Some places could see up to 80mm of rain, while parts of Wales may be hit by 100-150mm on higher ground, or 50-75mm generally across the region.
The heavy rainfall is expected to be "exacerbated" by strong easterly winds, as well as thunderstorms later on Friday. The Met Office has warned of potential power cuts, travel disruption, and damage to buildings. Travelers are urged to be cautious as a large swath of central and southern England and Wales will be soaked.
According to the Met Office chief meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, the slow-moving downpours mean "some areas could see up to a month's worth of rain in 24 hours." He added that the heavy rain will fall on saturated ground, increasing the chances of flooding.
Storm Claudia, named by the Spanish Meteorological Agency, has already brought heavy rain and strong winds to Spain and Portugal. The storm is not expected to directly cross the UK, but will maintain its position in the west.
