Arctic Blast Grips Scotland: Colder Than Moscow!

Heavy snow and ice brought Scotland to a standstill, forcing the closure of more than 100 schools in Aberdeenshire and many more in surrounding areas. Drifting snow and plummeting temperatures, recorded as low as -6.4C in Dundreggan – colder than Moscow – led to widespread travel disruption. Snow ploughs and gritters were deployed to manage the icy conditions and keep essential routes open.

Despite the challenging weather, many children embraced their snow days with enthusiasm, playing in sledges and building snowmen. Accumulations of over three and a half inches were recorded in areas like Loch Glascarnoch and Altnaharra. The Met Office issued yellow warnings for snow and ice, cautioning about potential travel delays and the risk of slips and falls on icy surfaces.

The severe cold is expected to be temporary, with milder temperatures forecasted for the weekend. While a yellow warning for ice in northern Scotland extended until Friday morning, the risk of snow diminishes as the weather turns. Sunshine is predicted for many areas as the country prepares for a return to more seasonal conditions.
