Upstate SC Braces for Dangerous Heat and Storms

Upstate South Carolina is experiencing a significant heat advisory today, August 14, as the National Weather Service predicts dangerous heat conditions. High temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s, with heat index values potentially soaring to 108 degrees Fahrenheit. The advisory is in effect from noon until 8 p.m., and residents are strongly advised to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

In addition to the extreme heat, the Upstate region faces a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms throughout the weekend, specifically August 14-16. Saturday, August 15, is anticipated to be the most active day for storms. Meteorologists warn of potential damaging winds. These pop-up storms offer some relief but have not ended the persistent drought conditions.

South Carolina continues to grapple with widespread drought, with over 60% of the state classified as experiencing some form of drought as of August 14. While recent rainfall has slightly improved the situation from earlier in the month, long-term precipitation deficits remain a concern. July was the 33rd driest on record, and the January-July period has been the third driest since 1895.
