Heatwave Halts Royal Guard Changes

Traditional Changing of the Guard ceremonies at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle were halted for the remainder of the week. This decision stems from forecasted excessive temperatures, with the Met Office issuing a red weather warning for extreme heat. Temperatures are expected to reach up to 39°C, posing a risk to life. The Army in London cited the well-being of soldiers, military working horses, and the public as paramount in their decision.

Adjustments were also made to other ceremonial operations. The King's Life Guard at Horse Guards changed without ceremony at 0800 on Wednesday to prevent heat stress to horses. Soldiers on guard duty were moved to shaded positions and subjected to more frequent changes, a standard practice in hot weather. The Army apologized for any disappointment caused to visitors, emphasizing the importance of safety in the extreme heat.
