Powerful blizzard conditions have impacted the Northeast, with Rhode Island experiencing record-breaking snowfall. Data from the National Weather Service (NWS) confirms that Providence's T.F. Green International Airport saw 37.9 inches of snow from the recent storm, surpassing the previous single-storm record of 28.6 inches from the 1978 blizzard.
A daily snowfall record was also broken, with 35.5 inches falling in a single day, eclipsing the 19 inches recorded during the 1996 blizzard. This same daily total also shattered the February 23rd record of 3.8 inches from 1967.
The storm led to blizzard warnings and emergency declarations in several states, including New York and New Jersey, resulting in widespread power outages and significant travel disruptions. Nearby states like New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts also reported substantial snow totals.
Looking ahead, lighter snow is anticipated in Rhode Island as a clipper system passes. Following this, another storm system is expected to move across the Midwest and into the eastern U.S. later in the week, potentially bringing mixed precipitation.
