Ranchi Battles Heat: Eco-Friendly Shelters Offer Cool Relief
15 Apr
Summary
- Temporary resting places and water facilities installed in Ranchi.
- Eco-friendly bamboo shelters offer relief to vulnerable populations.
- Fifteen shelters are planned, with eleven already installed.

Ranchi is implementing an initiative to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures by establishing temporary resting places, known as 'saray,' equipped with drinking water facilities. This measure is designed to offer immediate relief to vulnerable groups including pedestrians, street vendors, daily wage laborers, and senior citizens, all of whom can utilize these services free of charge.
The 'saray' are being constructed using sustainable, locally adaptable materials like bamboo, featuring thatched roofs. This marks the first time such an initiative has been undertaken in Ranchi. A total of 15 resting places are slated for installation in high-footfall areas for a duration of 90 days, with eleven having been set up thus far.
Locations for these shelters were chosen based on footfall intensity, direct sunlight exposure, and the presence of at-risk working populations. Each shelter receives 120 liters of water daily from the Ranchi Municipal Corporation and is managed by women from self-help groups.
