Punjab Schools Shut Down Amid Heavy Rains Forecast
26 Aug
Summary
- Punjab CM announces school closures from Aug 27-30
- Incessant rains inundate villages across several districts
- Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers in spate due to heavy rainfall

On August 26, 2025, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the closure of all schools in the state from August 27 to 30 in response to heavy rains forecast by the weather department. The decision comes as the state has been experiencing incessant rainfall for the past two days, leading to the inundation of villages across several districts.
The heavy downpours have caused the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers, as well as seasonal rivulets, to swell, flooding large swathes of farmland in villages along these water bodies. The release of surplus water from the Pong and Bhakra dams has further compounded the problems faced by residents in several districts, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, and Hoshiarpur.
Recognizing the need to ensure the safety of students, the Punjab government has decided to close all primary, secondary, and senior secondary government and private schools in the state for the four-day period. This measure aims to protect children from the adverse effects of the ongoing heavy rains and the resulting flooding.
