Punjab swelters: Heatwave alert issued
17 Apr
Summary
- Temperatures expected to rise by 3-4°C over next four days.
- Punjab health department opens dedicated heatstroke units.
- Excess rainfall earlier damaged wheat crops over 1.3 lakh acres.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is closely monitoring Punjab as temperatures steadily rise, nearing the threshold for an official heatwave declaration. A gradual increase of 3-4°C in maximum temperatures is anticipated over the next four days.
Cities such as Ludhiana, Patiala, and Faridkot are already experiencing high temperatures, with readings close to 40°C. Minimum temperatures are also increasing, contributing to uncomfortable, warmer nights for residents. This heatwave follows an unusual period of heavy rainfall earlier in April, which caused damage to wheat crops across more than 1.3 lakh acres.
Health experts are urging precautions against heat-related illnesses like dehydration and heatstroke. In response, the Punjab health department has initiated proactive measures, including the operationalization of dedicated heatstroke management units in district hospitals and community health centers. These units are equipped with cooling measures and essential medical supplies, including ORS and emergency drugs, to ensure citizen safety.
