10 Jul
Summary
- Roads on Ashadhi wari palkhi routes in Pune were repaired urgently.
- The BRTS route on Alandi Road was removed for smoother procession movement.
- Residents expressed concerns about road damage affecting devotees and commuters.

In Pune, recent heavy rains had damaged sections of the Ashadhi wari palkhi routes. The road department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) undertook urgent repairs over the past two days, taking advantage of a break in the rainfall to prevent inconvenience to the warkaris. Additionally, the bus rapid transit system (BRTS) route along Alandi Road was dismantled to ensure easier movement for the processions.
The annual palkhi processions of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj are significant events passing through Pune. The Tukaram Maharaj procession enters Pune via Harris Bridge, traversing Khadki and Wakdewadi. The Dnyaneshwar Maharaj procession arrives from Alandi, moving through Vishrantwadi and Sangamwadi. These two processions converge at the College of Engineering Pune Chowk in Shivajinagar before continuing through FC Road and Laxmi Road to their respective overnight halts.
Local residents highlighted the impact of the rain-damaged roads. Concerns were raised that repairs should have been completed well in advance of the processions, benefiting both the warkaris and regular commuters. Some residents also noted that more devotees than anticipated converged in Pune due to earlier appeals to avoid Alandi and Dehu because of the heavy rains, exacerbating the issues with potholed roads and general infrastructure.
Despite resident concerns, the head of the PMC's road department stated that road maintenance was prioritized and completed before deadlines, with ward offices actively involved in the restoration efforts. However, some residents also pointed out inadequate staying facilities at local schools and alleged harsh behavior from civic officials towards devotees seeking accommodation.
