Pune Swelters: Humidity Surge Fuels Discomfort
21 Apr
Summary
- Maximum temperatures in Pune neared 40°C with a significant humidity increase.
- High humidity makes sweat evaporation inefficient, increasing perceived temperature.
- Light rain and thunderstorms are forecast for Pune in the coming days.

Pune is currently grappling with a significant rise in humidity, exacerbating the discomfort caused by maximum temperatures hovering close to 40°C. This increase in relative humidity, from 21-34% last week to 48-63% in recent days, is attributed to moisture incursion over the region.
The combination of high heat and elevated humidity impairs the body's natural cooling mechanism. When sweat cannot evaporate efficiently due to moist air, it leads to a higher perceived temperature and a persistent sticky sensation, leaving residents feeling exhausted and sweaty.
However, some relief is on the horizon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light rain and thunderstorms across Pune district and surrounding areas, including Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, potentially starting soon and continuing until April 24.
These predicted thunderstorms may be accompanied by lightning, moderate rain, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, offering a much-needed break from the current oppressive weather conditions.
