Powerful Storm Floris Causes Widespread Disruption Across Northern UK
5 Aug
Summary
- Rail services suspended, delayed, or cancelled across northern UK
- Power outages affecting thousands of properties in Scotland
- Ongoing recovery efforts to clear debris and restore transport links
The powerful Storm Floris that struck the UK earlier this week has left a trail of disruption in its wake, particularly in the northern regions. As of August 5th, 2025, rail services across Scotland and northern England remain heavily impacted, with ScotRail, LNER, and TransPennine Express all reporting suspended, delayed, or cancelled routes.
The Scottish Government has reported over 119 incidents on the rail network caused by the storm, including 75 tree-related incidents. Network Rail is working tirelessly to clear the blocked routes and restore normal service. The disruption is expected to continue throughout the day, with some services not expected to resume until around 4 pm.
The storm has also caused significant power outages, with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) describing it as "the most-damaging summer storm in recent memory." At the height of the outages, around 43,500 properties were left without power, primarily in the Highlands, Moray, and Aberdeenshire regions. SSEN is working to reconnect affected customers, but the sustained nature of the high winds means some may remain without power overnight.
The recovery efforts are ongoing, but the UK is bracing for more unsettled weather later this week. A yellow wind warning remains in place for the Orkney and Shetland Islands, and a further period of wet and windy conditions is expected to hit the northwest of the country late on Wednesday and into Thursday, with the potential for gusts over 50 mph and up to 30mm of rain.
