Powerful Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda Poised to Batter UK and Europe

As of September 29th, 2025, two major tropical storms are threatening to bring a deluge to the UK. Hurricane Humberto, currently south of Bermuda, has strengthened to a powerful Category 4 hurricane in the past few days. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Imelda has formed and is expected to strengthen to hurricane-force as it moves north from the Bahamas.

Both storms are forecast to head eastwards across the Atlantic in the coming days, with the potential to be captured by the jet stream and whisked towards the British Isles. Tropical Storm Imelda is expected to take longer to reach the UK, spending at least the next week out at sea. However, there is uncertainty about whether it could follow a similar path to Humberto towards the UK, potentially leading to the UK's first named storm of the season.

Forecasters are also monitoring the possibility of the two storms combining into a rare 'Fujiwhara' phenomenon, where two weaker or smaller storms merge and form a larger, more powerful system. While the exact interaction of the storms is hard to predict, the influence of the larger and stronger Humberto is expected to tug at Imelda and help pull it away from the US and out to sea.
