Powerful Hurricane Imelda Nears Bermuda, Coastal Flooding Feared

As of October 1st, 2025, Hurricane Imelda is taking aim at Bermuda and is forecast to pass near the island close to Category 2 strength. The storm currently has sustained winds of 90 mph, making it a strong Category 1 hurricane. Imelda is located about 395 miles west-southwest of Bermuda and is moving east-northeast at 21 mph.
Bermuda remains under a hurricane warning, with hurricane conditions expected by Wednesday evening and tropical storm conditions by Wednesday afternoon. Forecasters predict 2-4 inches of rainfall that could lead to flash flooding, as well as coastal flooding from storm surge and onshore winds creating large, damaging waves.
The swells from Imelda and Hurricane Humberto continue to move across the Atlantic, impacting the U.S. East Coast and Bahamas. This is expected to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions, with waves of 6-9 feet north of Cape Canaveral and 5-8 feet south of the cape.
The 2025 hurricane season has been an active one so far, with 9 named cyclones, all of which have grown to tropical storm strength. Four of these have now become hurricanes, with all but Imelda having grown into major hurricanes. Despite the high activity, the U.S. has so far avoided a hurricane landfall, the first time in 10 years.
