Powerful Cold Front to Bring Heavy Rain, Winds to Western Australia
5 Sep
Summary
- Low-pressure system to bring thunderstorms, gale-force winds to Western Australia
- East coast to enjoy mild, sunny conditions
- Potential for localized flooding in southwest WA

As of September 5th, 2025, a major weather system is poised to impact Western Australia over the upcoming weekend. A low-pressure system is forecast to bring cold air, thunderstorms, and gale-force winds to the western parts of the country on Friday, while the east coast is expected to experience more favorable conditions.
The menacing cloud formations that gathered strength over the Indian Ocean on Thursday are set to cross the nation's southwest on Friday, before moving further east on Saturday. Southwestern regions of Western Australia can anticipate between 10 to 40mm of rain, with the heaviest rainfall expected to batter the areas between Geraldton and Esperance.
This weather system brings a risk of localized flooding, and a severe thunderstorm and wind warning has been issued for the stretch between Perth and Bunbury. However, according to the Bureau of Meteorology's senior hydrologist and flood specialist, Rob Lawry, the event is unlikely to be as severe as the flooding incidents earlier this year.

"It looks like it'll be a strong cold front, but at this point, we're not seeing evidence of really strong rainfall," Lawry stated. "It's not looking too bad at this point in time, it's at the stronger end as far as cold fronts go, but not the worst."
While Western Australia braces for the impending storm, the rest of the country is expected to experience more average rainfall over the month of September, according to the weather service's longer-term predictions. New South Wales and Queensland, in particular, are forecast to see typical rainfall levels for this time of year.
