Powerful Atlantic Storm to Batter UK in Late August
18 Aug
Summary
- Forecasters warn of heavy rain, strong winds, and plunging temperatures
- Storm linked to remnants of Hurricane Erin in the Atlantic
- Temperatures expected to drop by 14°C in some areas

According to the latest weather forecasts, the UK is bracing for a dramatic weather shift in the final days of August, as a powerful Atlantic storm system moves in from the west. Meteorologists say the storm, which is linked to the remnants of Hurricane Erin, is poised to deliver heavy downpours, strong winds, and a significant temperature drop across the country.
Weather maps generated on August 17th indicate that a massive band of rain will sweep across Ireland and the UK on Wednesday, August 27th, bringing the potential for severe flooding. The Met Office has warned that the high pressure system that has maintained settled and cool conditions will be swept away by these mighty Atlantic systems.
The initial signs of the storm are expected to emerge in the coming 10 days, with the main impact set to hit on Thursday morning. Fierce bursts of rain, highlighted in red and yellow on the maps, are poised to strike Ireland, Wales, and western England before moving eastwards throughout the day.

Alongside the heavy rainfall, the storm will also bring a dramatic temperature plunge, with parts of the country expected to be 14°C cooler than recent peaks. This summer, sections of the UK were hammered by four heatwaves, with temperatures reaching 34°C in London in July. However, the forecasts indicate that on August 26th, England may still see highs of 28°C, only for the mercury to tumble to the low 20s in southern Britain and the low to mid-10s in Scotland.
