The National Weather Service in Phoenix issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Maricopa County on Wednesday, August 12th, effective until 6 p.m. MST. This warning was in response to a storm located near Estrella Mountain Park and Avondale, which was nearly stationary.
Residents were alerted to hazards including 60 mph wind gusts and nickel-size hail, capable of causing damage to roofs, siding, and trees. The storm's path was expected to impact areas such as Avondale, Goodyear, and Tolleson, including a stretch of AZ Interstate 10. Torrential rainfall accompanying the storm also posed a risk of flash flooding, with a strong caution against driving through flooded roadways.
Thunderstorms are common in Arizona, particularly during the monsoon season from June 15 to September 30. A severe thunderstorm warning signifies imminent or ongoing storms with winds of 58 mph or higher and/or hail an inch in diameter or larger. The National Weather Service advised individuals to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building for protection.
