19 Dec
Summary
- Chicopee ski hill opens on time for the first time in five years.
- November storm brought 14 cm of snow, crucial for early opening.
- Last month was the snowiest in the region in 75 years.
Ski resorts across Ontario are experiencing an exceptionally strong start to the winter season, with Chicopee in Kitchener celebrating its best opening in 75 years. Thanks to substantial early snowfall, including 14 cm on November 9th alone, Chicopee is opening on time for the first time in half a decade, a welcome change from recent years plagued by warm weather and delayed openings.
This remarkable winter beginning was officially recognized by Environment and Climate Change Canada as one of the top 10 weather stories of the year. The mid-November storm, characterized by its rapid intensification and abundant moisture, contributed to this memorable winter weather, also making last month the snowiest November on record for the Waterloo region in 75 years.
Several other popular ski destinations, including Glen Eden in Milton, Blue Mountain in Collingwood, and Horseshoe Valley near Barrie, have also commenced their operations. While current conditions are favorable, meteorologists caution that fluctuating temperatures are expected, with a mid-week warmup anticipated to end, potentially leading to icy conditions as rain transitions to flurries.
