Southwestern Ontario Heat Wave Nears End
3 Jul
Summary
- Paramedics report an eight percent increase in heat-related calls.
- Heat wave caused cancellation of some Canada Day celebrations.
- Temperatures expected to cool significantly by Sunday.
As a prolonged heat wave grips southwestern Ontario, emergency services are experiencing a surge in heat-related incidents. The Middlesex-London Paramedic Service has noted an eight percent rise in calls, primarily from vulnerable populations like the elderly, who are suffering from symptoms such as shortness of breath and dizziness.
The intense heat, which has lasted five days, saw humidex values climb into the mid-40s. This extreme weather led to the cancellation of some Canada Day festivities and caused damage to a stretch of Highway 402 near Sarnia. Public health officials urged residents to take precautions, including staying hydrated and using designated cooling centers.
While conditions remain warm, with Friday's forecast humidex at 42 C, Environment Canada indicates the heat wave is nearing its conclusion. A noticeable drop in temperature is anticipated by Sunday, with highs around 26 C, offering much-needed respite. Residents are still advised to be vigilant for signs of heat exhaustion.
