Omega Block Locks US Weather: Heat, Rain, and Snow Predicted
30 May
Summary
- A persistent omega block pattern is influencing US weather.
- It causes a split: hot and dry in the north, cool and wet elsewhere.
- This pattern could continue for several weeks, affecting many regions.

A persistent weather pattern, known as an "omega block," is currently influencing the United States' weather as May transitions into June. This stalled jet stream phenomenon locks weather systems in place, resulting in a split forecast across the country.
The north-central U.S. is experiencing very warm and dry conditions under this pattern. In contrast, the West Coast and the South are facing cooler and wetter weather. Slow-moving storm systems in these wetter zones are raising concerns about flood risks.
Forecasters indicate that this omega block could linger for several weeks. A weaker version is anticipated from June 4-12. This pattern, common in spring, sees a large high-pressure area caught between two low-pressure systems, effectively jamming the jet stream and altering storm tracks.
The impact varies regionally: the Northeast expects unseasonably cool weather, while the northern Plains are experiencing well-above-average temperatures, with some areas seeing heat up to 20 degrees warmer than average. The South anticipates continued rain and thunderstorms due to a warm, humid air mass. The West may see heavy rain and mountain snow. Drier conditions in some areas, particularly the northern High Plains and central Canada, could increase fire risks.
