Oklahoma Heatwave: Hot Holiday Weekend Ahead
2 Jul
Summary
- Temperatures will reach the mid-to-upper 90s this holiday weekend.
- Heat indices are projected in the low 100s, feeling hotter.
- Nighttime temperatures will offer little relief, staying in the 70s.

Oklahomans are being urged by the National Weather Service to remain mindful of extreme heat conditions during the upcoming holiday weekend, which marks America's 250th birthday. Temperatures are predicted to reach the mid-to-upper 90s, exacerbated by recent rainfall that could drive heat indices into the low 100s. Western and southwestern regions of the state may experience highs between 100 and 102 degrees. However, heat indices, or 'feel-like' temperatures, are expected to be highest in Tulsa, potentially reaching 105 to 108 degrees. Residents are advised to take precautions like wearing lightweight clothing, seeking shade, staying hydrated, and using sunscreen. Nighttime temperatures are not expected to provide significant cooling, hovering in the 70s and 80s. Scattered storms are possible on Saturday evening in northern Oklahoma, with a low chance of rain and storms across the state on Sunday. Despite the intense heat, current forecasts indicate that temperatures will not break historical records, unlike the 105-degree high recorded in Oklahoma City on Independence Day in 1996.
