NYC Floods: Climate Change Makes Deluges the New Normal

New York City is increasingly vulnerable to flash flooding, with a flood watch in effect for Thursday afternoon and evening. Sporadic rainfall of up to two inches per hour is expected across the metropolitan area, including parts of Connecticut, Long Island, New Jersey, and the Lower Hudson Valley.

This recurrent flooding is attributed to climate change, which is causing hotter temperatures and enabling the atmosphere to hold more moisture, leading to heavier downpours. The city's sewer and drainage systems, largely unchanged since their construction over a century ago, are designed for a maximum of 1.75 inches of rainfall per hour and are rapidly overwhelmed by extreme weather.

Compounding the issue, New York City's coastal geography and rising sea levels are pushing groundwater tables higher. This reduces the soil's capacity to absorb storm water, slowing drainage and exacerbating flooding, particularly in low-lying and subterranean areas like basements and subway stations. The MTA already pumps millions of gallons of water daily from tunnels.

Officials emphasize preparedness. New Yorkers are encouraged to sign up for NotifyNYC and New York Alert for warnings about extreme rain and flash floods. In case of a flood warning, moving to higher ground is advised. For subway flooding, passengers must follow instructions from station personnel and listen to announcements. Driving through flooded roads is extremely dangerous, with the "Turn around, don't drown" mantra strongly advised.
