Northern Lights to Dazzle Skies This Weekend
4 Jun
Summary
- Geomagnetic storms are predicted from Thursday to Friday.
- Northern US states and Canada may see the aurora.
- A bright moon might obscure fainter aurora displays.

Aurora enthusiasts have a reason to look up as the northern lights are anticipated to be visible from Thursday, June 4, through Friday, June 5. This potential display is thanks to predicted G4-strength geomagnetic storms. Residents in northern U.S. states and parts of Canada may have a chance to witness this natural phenomenon.
Forecasters at NOAA predict isolated periods of G1 geomagnetic storming on Thursday. More significantly, a G3 or even G4 geomagnetic storm is expected on Friday, potentially extending aurora visibility to mid-latitudes. This could affect as many as 23 U.S. states. However, observers should be aware that a bright waning gibbous moon will rise after midnight, possibly interfering with the visibility of fainter auroral displays. It is also important to note that space weather forecasts are subject to rapid changes.
