NJ Commute Chaos: Snow, Sleet, Ice Ahead

Parts of northern New Jersey are anticipating a difficult Tuesday morning commute due to an impending storm delivering snow, sleet, and ice. While rain will drench the rest of the state, northwestern counties could see a light glaze of ice and 1 to 2 inches of snow. Higher elevations in Sussex County may receive up to 4 to 6 inches. Winter weather advisories are in effect for several northern counties.

The storm system is expected to bring widespread precipitation, transitioning from snow to rain from Tuesday morning into the early afternoon. Northeast winds will shift to northwest by the afternoon, gusting up to 35 mph. This combination of heavy, wet snow and strong winds raises concerns for downed tree branches and potential scattered power outages in affected northern areas.

Following this initial storm, much colder air will settle in for the remainder of the week, with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below normal. Standing water and slush may refreeze, creating hazardous black ice conditions, especially north of Interstate 78. Another storm system is possible by Friday night into Saturday, though its impacts remain uncertain.
