A comprehensive state of emergency is now in effect throughout New Jersey as a potent winter storm prepares to blanket the state with 4 to 9 inches of snow and sleet. The declaration, issued by Acting Governor Tahesha Way, encompasses all 21 counties and took effect this afternoon. This measure aims to mitigate potential damage and hardship from the severe weather.
As snowfall begins between 1 and 3 p.m. in northern areas, residents are advised to stay informed and off the roads. Snowfall rates could reach up to 2 inches per hour during the heaviest periods Friday evening. Winter storm warnings are active for 11 northern counties, anticipating significant accumulation, while winter weather advisories are in place for eight southern counties, forecasting mixed precipitation and icy conditions.
To ensure public safety and facilitate emergency response, a commercial vehicle restriction commenced at 3 p.m. on major highways. The state court system also implemented an early closure starting at 1 p.m. This proactive declaration underscores the seriousness of the expected weather, urging non-essential personnel to avoid travel and allow emergency services unimpeded access.
