Snowfall Soars: Is Drought Relief on the Way?
3 Mar
Summary
- Concord has received more snow this winter than in five years.
- Despite heavy snow, the entire state remains in drought conditions.
- Snowmelt's impact on drought relief depends on how it occurs.

New Hampshire has received a substantial amount of snowfall this winter, with some areas logging even more precipitation than in recent years. Concord, for example, has recorded its highest snowfall in five years, and North Conway has already seen over 60 inches. State Climatologist Mary Stampone highlighted that this increased snowpack places the state in a favorable position for potential drought improvement.
However, Stampone cautioned that the snow alone does not guarantee an end to the ongoing drought conditions affecting the entire state. The effectiveness of the snowmelt in alleviating dryness depends critically on the process. A rapid melt could result in widespread flooding and water runoff into rivers, limiting its ability to seep into the ground. Conversely, a slow and steady melt offers a more beneficial outcome for combating the persistent dry conditions.
