Two western provinces in Nepal, Gandaki and Lumbini, are predicted to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from Friday to Sunday. This forecast includes thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall during the period of September 25 to 27.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a public alert, urging caution. The anticipated heavy rains could trigger floods, landslides, and mudslides. Additionally, urban and low-lying terai areas may face significant inundation.
Senior meteorologist Binod Pokharel confirmed the heavy rainfall forecast for Nepal between September 24 and 28, noting that while weather models show variations in the exact amounts and affected areas, the likelihood of substantial rainfall is high. He strongly advised the public to remain vigilant and prepare for potential hazards.
Specific rainfall predictions indicate Koshi and Bagmati provinces may see normal rainfall on September 23 and 24. Madhes province is expected to receive rain on September 24 and 25. Gandaki and Lumbini are forecast to have rain from September 24 to 28, while Karnali and Sudurpaschim could experience it from September 25 to 27.
For those planning mountain treks, Pokharel recommended returning by Thursday. He also emphasized the importance of checking weather forecasts before undertaking any travel, especially in vulnerable mountainous terrains.
