Nagpur Airport Choked by Worsening Winter Fog
4 Feb
Summary
- January sees nearly 79 hours of fog, more than double December's.
- Fog occurrence at Nagpur airport increased significantly after 2018.
- Shallow fog contributes over 70% to total winter fog events.

Winter fog activity has intensified at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, posing significant operational challenges. A recent long-term climatological study reveals a notable increase in fog occurrence in recent winters, especially after 2018, leading to prolonged periods of low visibility.
January emerged as the most impacted month, experiencing nearly 79 hours of fog between 2005 and 2025. This duration is more than double that of December and substantially higher than February, significantly affecting flight operations and runway availability.
The study, led by scientist Rizwan Ahmed, underscores the critical nature of fog as a weather hazard for aviation. It noted that shallow fog constitutes over 70% of total fog events, while dense fog was primarily observed in December, impacting the month with the greatest fog intensity.
