Mumbai Heatwave Alert: Scorching Temperatures Ahead
9 Oct
Summary
- Mumbai may face heatwave conditions on Friday post-monsoon.
- Temperatures are expected to reach 38°C in suburbs, 37°C in South Mumbai.
- Rising heat contributes to a dip in Mumbai's air quality to moderate levels.
Mumbai is set to experience heatwave conditions on Friday, less than a week after the monsoon officially departed. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts daytime temperatures could reach 38 degrees Celsius in the suburbs and 37 degrees in South Mumbai. These elevated temperatures are defined as a heatwave when they exceed normal levels by 4.5 degrees Celsius.
This heatwave is occurring amidst a Super El Niño event, which influences global atmospheric circulation. An anti-cyclonic circulation over the region is preventing air from rising and stalling the sea breeze, trapping pollutants near the surface and leading to a drop in air quality. The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) in Mumbai reached 120 on Thursday, the highest for the month, with PM2.5 and PM10 being the primary pollutants.
