Mumbai braces for heat: Yellow alert issued
13 Apr
Summary
- Mumbai to experience hot and humid conditions with temps over 35 degrees.
- Heat index in several areas surpassed 38 degrees due to high humidity.
- Anticyclone circulation is contributing to the rise in temperatures.

Mumbai is bracing for a significant increase in temperatures and humidity from Wednesday, April 16, to Thursday, April 17. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, warning of hot and humid conditions across the city and other Konkan districts. Maximum temperatures are expected to climb above 35 degrees Celsius in Mumbai.
The city has already experienced warm weather, with its Santacruz observatory recording 35 degrees Celsius on Monday, 1.6 degrees above normal. High humidity levels pushed the heat index beyond 38 degrees in several localities. This surge in heat is attributed to an anticyclone circulation potentially bringing dry northerly winds.
While a yellow alert is in effect for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and neighboring Thane and Raigad districts starting Tuesday, the IMD has not issued any heatwave alerts yet. A heatwave in coastal regions like Mumbai is typically declared when temperatures consistently exceed normal by 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celsius. Historically, Mumbai's warmest April day was recorded on April 14, 1952, reaching 42.2 degrees Celsius.
