Monsoon Mayhem: Fresh Low-Pressure System Brews Over Bay of Bengal
21 Aug
Summary
- Fresh low-pressure area expected to form over north-west Bay of Bengal by Monday
- Extremely heavy rain drenched Gujarat, Assam, and Meghalaya in the last 24 hours
- Monsoon trough shifted northward, bringing active monsoon conditions to central and north India

As of August 21, 2025, the Indian monsoon continues to dominate the weather patterns across the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that a fresh low-pressure area is expected to form over the north-west Bay of Bengal and north Odisha and West Bengal coasts by Monday.
This development comes even as a circulation from an erstwhile depression hovered over east Rajasthan. The 24 hours leading up to August 21 saw extremely heavy rain drenching Gujarat, while Assam and Meghalaya also experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall. Other regions affected by heavy to very heavy rain include the hills of West Bengal and Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.
The monsoon trough, which is crucial for the distribution of rainfall, has shifted northward from around the Mumbai latitude towards north Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. This has resulted in active monsoon conditions over central and north India, with the IMD predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days over states like Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.
The weather patterns are being further influenced by a western disturbance over the hills of northwest India, providing a perfect foil for the monsoon. Going forward, the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over north Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra for the next week.
