The current heat wave, which began on Monday, July 20, has placed most of Mississippi under a Level 2 warning, with temperatures nearing 100 degrees and heat indices reaching up to 110 degrees. This extreme heat poses significant health risks, including heat stroke and exhaustion.
Adding to the perilous weather conditions, Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to form imminently. As of Monday morning, Tropical Depression Two was located south of Panama City and is forecast to strengthen. The storm is predicted to track west along the northern Gulf Coast.
Forecasters anticipate Bertha will bring life-threatening swells and dangerous rip currents. Rainfall totals of 2-4 inches are expected from western Florida to the Middle Texas Coast, with locally higher amounts up to 6 inches, potentially leading to flash flooding in low-lying and urban areas.
