2 Oct
Summary
- Melbourne saw its wettest day in over two years with up to 50mm of rain.
- Flash floods occurred, trapping a family of four under a bridge.
- Over 100mm of rain is predicted for parts of Victoria this weekend.
Melbourne endured its wettest day in more than two years on Thursday, as a fierce downpour delivered up to 50 millimetres of rain. This intense rainfall triggered localized flash flooding across the city. A family of four was rescued after their vehicle became trapped in floodwaters beneath the York Street bridge in South Melbourne.
Senior meteorologist David Crock noted that a significant portion of the rain fell within a single hour during the afternoon. The Victorian State Emergency Service reported approximately 200 calls for assistance across the state since midday Thursday.
Looking ahead, a low-pressure system is expected to bring more than 100 millimetres of rain to central and eastern Victoria before conditions ease on Sunday. Cooler temperatures are also anticipated, with daily averages expected to peak at 19 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 16 degrees on Sunday.
