Maharashtra Monsoon Pause: Is a Delay Imminent?
11 Jun
Summary
- Monsoon advancement in Maharashtra has slowed due to weak westerly winds.
- Pune and Mumbai's monsoon onset is on track for the climatological date of June 10.
- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is monitoring for a potential delay if progress halts for over 48 hours.

The advancement of the southwest monsoon across Maharashtra has experienced a temporary pause, attributed to the absence of strong westerly winds. Meteorologists at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune emphasize that this lull is currently within the normal timeframe for monsoon onset in key cities like Pune and Mumbai, which is climatologically dated for June 10.
A definitive delay in the monsoon's arrival will only be declared if the current static situation persists for more than 48 hours. Currently, the state is not experiencing the widespread rainfall characteristic of an active monsoon system. The monsoon initially entered Maharashtra on June 6, covering parts of Sindhudurg and subsequently advancing into Kolhapur, Satara, Ratnagiri, and parts of Solapur by June 8.
Recent rainfall in Vidarbha and Marathwada, while noted, is considered pre-monsoon activity rather than a direct result of the advancing monsoon current. The northern limit of the monsoon (NLM) as of June 10 passes through Harnai, Solapur, and Kalaburagi, among other locations. Conditions are favorable for further monsoon advancement into more parts of Maharashtra and neighboring states over the next three to four days, with temporary pauses being a common occurrence during the onset phase.
