22 Oct
Summary
- Madurai city records 50.8 mm rainfall, leading to severe flooding

On October 22, 2025, heavy rains have been pounding the southern regions of India, causing severe flooding and disrupting daily life. In Madurai city, the rainfall reached 50.8 mm in the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday morning, leading to widespread inundation.
The Vaigai river, which flows through Madurai, has seen a significant increase in its outflow, reaching around 3,000 cusecs of surplus water. This has prompted the district administration to urge the public to stay away from the riverbanks in the coming days. Authorities have also blocked stretches of the Vaigai North Bank Road and Vaigai South Bank Road due to flooding, leading to traffic congestion in the area.
The Disaster Management Department officials have been closely monitoring the situation, with Madurai Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar and Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan inspecting crucial locations affected by the heavy rains. They are also keeping a close eye on the storage levels of the Sathaiyar Dam, Mullaperiyar Dam, and Vaigai Dam to ensure proper water discharge.
Despite the severe weather conditions, the district administration has managed to respond effectively, with no major casualties reported so far. Authorities have been working to pump out water from inundated residential areas and repair damaged infrastructure, such as a road that was eroded by the floodwaters in Peraiyur.
As the rainfall continues, the district officials remain vigilant, ready to take further action to protect the residents and mitigate the impact of the ongoing monsoon mayhem.
