Ludhiana Swelters: Heatwave Alert Issued

Ludhiana is currently experiencing significant heat, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a heatwave alert. Temperatures on Monday reached 42°C, a marked increase above the seasonal norm. The IMD has designated Monday and Tuesday with a yellow alert for heatwave conditions, escalating to an orange alert for severe heatwaves on Wednesday.

Looking ahead, the weather forecast indicates a shift with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds expected on Thursday. Friday may bring a possibility of hailstorms accompanied by similar adverse weather conditions. These forecasts underscore the need for vigilance regarding rapidly changing weather patterns.

In response to the extreme heat, health authorities have provided crucial guidance. Residents are strongly advised to minimize direct sun exposure during the hottest parts of the day. Staying well-hydrated with water, ORS, and lemon water is paramount. Furthermore, wearing light cotton clothing and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities are recommended. Vulnerable groups, including children and senior citizens, are urged to take enhanced precautions due to increased risks of heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Beyond human health, the extreme heat poses risks to livestock. Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has issued an advisory for farmers, highlighting potential reductions in milk production and increased heat stress among animals. Recommendations include ensuring proper ventilation, shaded shelters, regular water sprinkling, and adequate drinking water access for dairy animals to mitigate these effects.
