London Ambulance Service Overwhelmed by Heatwave Calls
27 May
Summary
- Emergency calls reached levels not seen since the pandemic peak.
- Tuesday saw the service's sixth-busiest day ever.
- Paramedics urge public to call 999 only for life-threatening emergencies.

London's emergency services experienced an unprecedented surge in calls on Tuesday, with call handlers receiving 8,121 requests to 999. This volume matches levels not seen since the height of the Covid pandemic, marking it as the London Ambulance Service's sixth-busiest day ever. The majority of calls were linked to the extreme heat, including breathing difficulties, dizziness, and fainting.
Record-breaking temperatures, with highs provisionally reaching 35.1C in Kew Gardens, prompted these high call volumes. Deputy chief paramedic Alison Blakely emphasized the critical need for the public to only contact 999 for life-threatening situations. She advised Londoners to stay hydrated, avoid excessive alcohol, and check on vulnerable individuals, especially as heat health alerts remain in effect across several regions.
Amidst the heatwave, concerns also extend to open water safety, with nine recent deaths attributed to people getting into trouble in the water. Authorities are reminding the public to exercise extreme caution. While temperatures are expected to cool slightly, heat health alerts will persist, underscoring the ongoing risks associated with hot weather.
