Holiday Travel Chaos? Lake Effect Snow Warning Issued

Residents in Southern Erie, Wyoming, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus counties are advised to prepare for significant lake effect snow. A warning is in effect from Thursday morning through Saturday morning, with forecasts predicting between 12 and 20 inches of snow in the hardest-hit areas. The severe weather event is expected to severely impact Thanksgiving holiday travel plans.

Adding to the snow accumulation, strong winds are anticipated, gusting as high as 50 mph. These powerful winds will likely lead to considerable blowing and drifting snow, drastically reducing visibility on roadways. The National Weather Service warns that travel conditions will be very difficult, making it essential for anyone on the road to be prepared for rapid changes.

Beyond travel disruptions, the combination of heavy snow and high winds poses additional risks. The weather service indicated that gusty winds could cause tree branches to fall, potentially leading to isolated power outages. The precipitation will fall in narrow bands, so road conditions and visibility can change abruptly.
