Kolkata Braces for Thunderstorms: Yellow Alert Issued
30 Apr
Summary
- Kolkata may experience relief from the heatwave with forecasted rainfall and thunderstorms.
- A yellow alert is in effect for Kolkata, with rain expected until May 2.
- Sub-Himalayan districts in Bengal could see heavy rainfall until May 3.

Kolkata and surrounding areas are poised for a change in weather as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts rainfall and thunderstorms. A yellow alert has been issued for Kolkata throughout the week, signaling a potential end to the current heatwave conditions.
The forecast indicates thunderstorms and rain are likely in Kolkata and its neighboring districts until May 2. These conditions are attributed to a cyclonic circulation over North Bengal and moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal. Strong gusty winds, with speeds of 40-50 kmph, are also expected to accompany the rainfall.
Beyond Kolkata, several districts in West Bengal are expected to receive rainfall until May 3. Heavy showers are specifically forecast for the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar. Other districts in South Bengal may experience thunderstorms with winds reaching 50-60 kmph.
Earlier, a red alert was issued for western districts of Bengal, warning of heavy showers and lightning. The Nor'Wester phenomenon, which previously impacted Howrah and the 24 Parganas districts, is now influencing Kolkata with strong winds. Fishermen are advised against venturing into the sea along the West Bengal and north Odisha coasts until May 2.
