The 'City of Joy', Kolkata, is preparing for a week of significant weather changes, with rainfall and thunderstorms predicted to begin on April 5, 2026. This forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) signals a welcome respite from the current scorching heat, which saw temperatures reach 36.1°C.
The weather is expected to be partly cloudy on April 6, with chances of moderate rain or thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds of 30-40 kmph. Minimum temperatures are forecast around 24°C, and maximums near 34°C.
Conditions are set to intensify from April 7 to April 9. During these days, Kolkata and its surrounding districts are likely to be lashed by intense thunderstorms. Temperatures will hover between 22°C and 33°C, with strong thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging from 40-50 kmph expected to impact daily life. Weather scientist Sourish Bandyopadhyay noted that a trough and cyclonic circulation near Bengal, with an indirect impact from a western disturbance, are contributing to these conditions.
By April 10, a slight improvement is anticipated, with partly cloudy skies and a reduced chance of major weather disruptions. Temperatures are expected to be between 25°C and 33°C. Residents are advised to be prepared for frequent rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds, especially during the peak period from April 7 to April 9.
