Yellow Alert: Kolkata Braces for Thunderstorms, Relief Ahead
17 Apr
Summary
- Kolkata faces yellow alert for thunderstorms, rain, and gusty winds.
- Temperatures expected to range between 34-36°C and 24-25°C.
- Nor'wester spell predicted to bring temporary relief from heat.

The 'City of Joy,' Kolkata, is bracing for a stormy week ahead, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for two days. Residents can anticipate thunderstorms, rain, and gusty winds, bringing a welcome break from the prevailing hot and humid weather. Temperatures are expected to hover around 34-36 degrees Celsius for the maximum and 24-25 degrees Celsius for the minimum.
The IMD has warned of partly cloudy skies with a possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorms today and tomorrow. This comes after recent days experienced stifling conditions with temperatures around 35°C and high humidity. A nor'wester spell is increasingly likely for Kolkata and surrounding districts on Thursday, potentially accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50-60 kmph.
Light to moderate rain is forecast for Thursday in South Bengal, including areas bordering Kolkata. While these storms may cause short-term disruptions, they are expected to temporarily lower both the mercury and humidity levels. From April 19 onwards, the weather is forecast to stabilize, with heat and humidity dominating after the initial spell of unsettled weather.
