Kolkata Hit by 75 Kmph Squall & Hailstorm
24 Jun
Summary
- A 75 kmph squall brought a hailstorm and thunder to Kolkata.
- The city recorded 59 mm of rainfall, the second-highest this June.
- Gusty winds uprooted several trees across the metropolitan area.

Kolkata was struck by a powerful squall on Tuesday afternoon, with wind speeds escalating to 75 kmph. This weather event was accompanied by a significant hailstorm and frequent thunder and lightning, bringing a substantial amount of rain to the city.
During this intense period, Kolkata recorded 59 mm of rainfall, which was the second-highest single-day rainfall logged for June. The sudden downpour and gusty winds led to a notable drop in temperature, cooling the city significantly. Unfortunately, the strong winds resulted in numerous trees being uprooted across Kolkata.
Meteorologists explained that the squall was caused by powerful convective clouds. These clouds formed locally due to a combination of abundant moisture and intense surface heating, a common occurrence when the sun heats the ground, causing warm air to rise and condense.
Officials noted that despite a generally weak monsoon flow across the country, the region's proximity to the Bay of Bengal facilitates abundant moisture, making it prone to such thunderstorm activities. While scattered showers with less intensity are anticipated for Wednesday, the severe weather event of Tuesday has concluded.
