Kolkata Drenched: Thunderstorms Bring Much-Needed Relief
29 May
Summary
- Evening thunderstorm provided significant relief from heat.
- Temperatures dropped approximately three degrees Celsius quickly.
- Rainfall patterns varied across different city areas.

Kolkata experienced much-needed relief on Thursday evening as a thunderstorm brought welcome rain and gusty winds. This weather event caused the mercury to drop by approximately three degrees Celsius, from around 30°C to 27°C, breaking a spell of heat and humidity that had persisted for over a week. The conditions were attributed to a cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand and a trough extending across several states, drawing moisture from the Bay of Bengal.
While northern parts of the city received intense rain with thunder and lightning, southern and central areas experienced lighter spells. Wind speeds reached between 50 kmph and 60 kmph during the thunderstorm. Both maximum and minimum temperatures on Thursday were below normal, with the minimum temperature notably lower than in the preceding ten days. Meteorologists anticipate similar thundershower activity on Friday, with a slight dip in heat index, though dry spells might return by Saturday.
